Lupe wants you to know your history.
Hope you enjoyed your long weekend. The Hip Hop Theater Festival is kicking off today in DC and there will be lots to see and do. There is a kick-off party happening tonight at Marvin in the U Street Corridor. And throughout the week there will be performances, parties and panel discussions (starting with a talk tomorrow about the fine line between fine art and graffiti).
The highlight should definitely be the free performance of Voices Remix: A People’s History of the United States happening at the Terrace Theater at the Kennedy Center. This is a long running and travelling piece of original theater. It started in 2003 with readings held nationwide of the revised edition of Howard Zinn’s renowned work, A People’s History of the United States. The performance in Washington this year will be featuring the likes of rapper and friend to Kanye West, Lupe Fiasco. Others on the playbill include writer Walter Mosley, actor Michael Ealy (from the movies Seven Pounds and Miracle at St. Anna), author Staceyann Zinn and DJ Earth 1ne.
For more information, check out the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage website and the official website for the Hip Hop Theater Festival.
And if you are planning on checking out the performance of Voices Remix tomorrow, the event will be free and open to the public. However, they recommend standing in line early to be sure to get a ticket. Hey, got anything better to do?
